The Bluebirds were back at Coronation Park after a first match away defeat at East London Vixens to take on one of last seasons performers Wasps FC Women. With a full match-day squad of 22 including several new players who have joined up this season making their home debuts, the Bluebirds, playing downhill in the first half, made a strong start and made good on the possession converting their first meaningful attack into points within 5 minutes as Jess Matthews went over for their first home try of the season, adding the extras for an early 7-0 lead. Possession remained key for the Bluebirds and again it paid off 10 minutes later with Victoria 'Grainger' Boyd crossing for her first try of the season and with Jess converting again giving the home side a 14-0 lead. Not long after, a well worked driving maul off a 5 metre line out saw Vicki Carcary score to take Chelmsford into a 19-0 lead within 25 minutes. Wasps FC Women showed some signs of hitting back but a much improved defensive showing propelled any attempts to infiltrate the Bluebirds 22. Just before halftime, the Bluebirds attacking prowess showed with the bonus point score from Harri Wells to send the Bluebirds into half time 24-0 to the good.
The second half proved to be a much tougher affair for the Bluebirds with Wasps FC enjoying decent periods of possession, but as in the first half, the defensive effort from the Bluebirds was up to the task, and it wasn't until 10 minutes from the end that the backs got into the scoring again with Brenda Stubar hitting an excellent line from fullback to round in behind the posts to dot down for the 5th score. 29-0. 5 minutes later and with Wasps Women down to 14 due to a yellow card, another well worked team effort saw Nicola Conquest touch down for her first try of the season, a 6th for the Bluebirds and with Jess adding the extras from a tight angle an unassailable lead of 36-0
The final minutes saw Wasps Women throw everything but the kitchen sink at the Bluebirds defence in search of points but to no avail as the last play saw the ball held up and the referees whistle blown. Final Score Chelmsford Ladies 36-0 Wasps FC Women
Thanks to Wasps Women for a great game played in an excellent spirit and wish them the best for the rest of the season. The Bluebirds are back in action next Sunday, on the road again away to Thamesians Women, always a tough and competitive fixture so all support welcome.
