This was Chelmsford’s most disappointing performance of the season. Chelmsford, throughout, lacked real fire and passion and made life far too easy for a belligerent, hard-working Campion side. Chelmsford always had the upper hand in the set scrums and the lineouts were even. Chelmsford did not help themselves by giving penalties away, on six occasions for the same offence.
Chelmsford took the lead after fifteen minutes with a well taken try. Marcus Pottinger caught a Campion kick, drove forward before feeding Henry Payne who made good ground and then the ball was relayed quickly along the backline to Tom Acorn who went in at the corner for an unconverted try. Chelmsford should have gone away from the opposition at this stage playing down the slope, but passes were dropped and kicks at goal were missed. It was Campion who scored from a penalty after half an hour, and they had other chances which they missed from subsequent penalties
Half time score line 5-3 to the visitors.
The sides were very evenly matched at this stage, Chelmsford were dominating the set scrum but continued to give away penalties. From a penalty, Campion kicked to the 5 metre line and from the resultant lineout, virtually the whole of their team joined to push over for a try, which was well converted from the touchline. Chelmsford started to put pressure on Campion but often lost possession in critical areas and the Campion fly half did an excellent job gaining ground with some telling kicks. With five minutes left on the clock, Chelmsford scored by dismantling the Campion scrum from five metres out, to level the scores, with Paul Redford pickup at the base of the scrum and he forced his way over for a unconverted try. With minutes to go Chelmsford again gave away two kickable penalties, the first hit the post and rebounded to a Chelmsford player and the second sailed through the posts to seal victory for the home side.
