In the final game of 2024 Chelmsford travelled up the A12 and along the A14 to Stowmarket. Having beaten he opposition convincingly in September, Chelmsford would need to be at their competitive best to win on the road.
The game was played on a heavy pitch in light drizzle. Early signs indicated that the cross wind would hamper the lineout and handling, as both sides struggled to gain a foothold in the game. The first score after 20 minutes saw Ash Toomey splash over and Joel Barker scored the second try from a smart short lineout. Stowmarket 0 Chelmsford 12.
Despite their league position, Stowmarket were playing with commitment and passion but the third try came from a kick and chase from Barker that was pounced on by Toomey converted by Jamie Morrish. Stowmarket however did get on the scoreboard in the final five minutes of the first half to make the half time score - Stowmarket 5 Chelmsford 17.
Back in the changing room at half time, all the players agreed that a simple game plan needed to be implemented due to weather conditions. Josh Cavey scored try number four and MOM Harry Sturge cut a great line to run 20 metres and stretch for the line. In between these two tries Stowmarket scored their second try - Stowmarket 12 Chelmsford 29.
The final Chelmsford try came from a dominate scrum and and a skip over the line from full back Morrish. The final play of the game saw Stowmarket score their third try to make the final score - Stowmarket 17 Chelmsford 36. Special mention should go to both James Easdown and Aeden McArthur playing in the second row for the first time together. Both players really helped the group.
